Tax credits are NOT just for low income earners. Ninety per cent of families are entitled to something. If your total annual household income is anything up to £58,175 you will probably be able to make a successful claim.

Even if your income is higher it may still be worth making a claim, especially if you are self employed.

And the amounts involved are by no means trivial. Claims of £500 to £1,000 are quite standard -- in certain circumstances they can be for thousands of pounds.

Our tax guide will guide you through the tax credit maze. It tells you in plain English everything you need to know about claiming your Child Tax Credits and Working Tax Credits.
